Did someone mention bagpipes, haggis, whisky and poetry? Yes, the 25th of January is fast approaching, which is the birthday of Scottish poet Rabbie Burns!
Whether you have a Scottish connection or just fancy a knees-up, we’ve rounded up some Burns Night Portsmouth celebrations that you might like to get involved in.
So, in no particular order, here they are…
Jack House Gallery – Thursday 25 January
This year, Burns Night falls on the closing night of Fragments Flotsam and Jetsam, the best show yet from Hampshire artists Jonny and Sharon Hannah – which Lou has covered here.
Jack House invites you to eat haggis, have a drink, hear Jonny (and hopefully a few others too) recite some Burns poetry – and even sing a song or two together. The event will begin at around 5.30pm and run until around 8pm, and it’s completely FREE!
This sounds like a really good excuse to get together for a bit of fun, with some really good art in the background, of course. For more info, follow their socials.
Portsmouth Cathedral – Thursday 25 January
What could make a more poetic venue for a Burns Night Ceilidh than our local cathedral? This event has been designed for all ages, making a great family outing with live music, food and dancing!
The event starts at 7.30pm and the Woodsiders will lead the evening’s traditional Scottish music and Ceilidh dancing (no previous dance experience required).
Entry includes hot food and dessert, with a range of other snacks and drinks available to purchase. Tickets cost £17 for adults and £10 for under-16s and are available here.
The Eastney Tavern – Saturday 20 January
Tickets have been selling fast for a traditional Burns Night Supper in this cosy welcoming local pub on the Saturday evening before Burns Night.
A three course menu is provided, with choices including Scottish favourites cock-a-leekie soup, haggis (including a vegetarian option) and raspberry cranachan. There’s also a free welcome drink, a bagpiper, an address and toast to the haggis, poetry and Scottish music.
Tickets cost £35 – check their socials for full info and contact details and get yourself booked in.
The Canteen – Thursday 25 January
This historic waterside building in Old Portsmouth makes a very atmospheric venue for an evening event, and Burns Night is no exception.
Smoked salmon, Scotch broth, haggis and cranachan all feature on the menu this year, and there are a choice of dining times and vegan options available. There will also be a traditional bagpiper and ‘extra special cocktails’ are promised!
Tickets cost £40 and booking is required here.
