The yellow-fronted eatery based in Portsmouth’s city centre is an absolute favourite of mine. I first went here when it was called Fries Love. The menu offered a huge range of fries created in a hundred different ways. On the menu were also Korean Chicken and Korean Corn Dogs.
Over time, the independent realised that it wanted to do all Korean food and so changed its name to Busan Bites. What I loved is that our firm family favourite, the Korean boneless chicken pieces stayed on the menu and is one of our go-to’s when we head off for food.
New Soup Menu
Busan Bites recently added their soup range and I had to go pay a visit to find out how good it is. Loving Wagamama’s for the last 20 years and the ramen dishes they do there, I was keen to see how the Busan Bites menu faired. I wasn’t disappointed.
There are currently 2 soup dishes, one is vegan and the other is a beef option. I have tried both. On my first visit, I opted for the Doenjang Guk vegan dish. It comprises of soybean paste soup with rice noodles and topped with oyster mushrooms. I really loved this and have had this on more occasions. I love the soup stock as so tasty and the fresh green ingredients on the top convince you that you are eating extremely healthy! Being a light dish that is fulfilling but not overwhelming to your digestive system means you finish the dish feeling content but not over stuffed.
The beef soup dish is called Yukgaejang which uses a slow brisket. The stock part of the dish is so flavoursome. I prefer the vegan dish just because I don’t eat red meat but I loved trying the liquid in the bowl when my husband had finished his serving. The prices of the soup dishes are between £13.00 and £13.50.
Family Owned
Having visited here for a few years, I love the owners Anna and Jack’s passion for bringing a cool Korean independent food place to the city. Their drive is fuelled by their dream of providing the local community with a taste of Korean cuisine. Both Anna and Jack wanted a restaurant in Portsmouth where locals could experience the vibrant flavours of Korean Street Food.
Being a family-owned restaurant located on Commercial Road they said they are dedicated to serving up delicious food with a modern twist on traditional recipes. Busan Bites want you to join their culinary journey where every bite tells a story of heritage and flavour.
The full menu of interesting and popular dishes include Korean classic corn dogs priced at £9.00 and box style options like their original size box priced at £14.50.
Feelings of Sunshine
The interior of the restaurant really makes me feel like I am on holiday in some eastern destination. The yellow accent throughout from the moment you open the door to the new murals across the walls means you feel uplifted and feel ready to enjoy some food. I also love all the paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the extra little touches that the owners have created along the way.
Pop along to their restaurant on Commercial Road which sits just along from the Sainsbury’s on the corner and try the food for yourself. They also offer takeaway options via Uber Eats and Deliveroo which you can place through the apps or visiting the website here.
