As if there isn’t enough to be excited about for November, on the first day, Roo Abrook is holding her first-ever solo show at the Corner Collective in Southsea.
Fans of the artist’s work will have seen some amazing collections pop up at the corner gallery over the last three years, but Roo has never held a solo show there before. Roo’s distinctive style and amazing fan base mean there will be a big buzz on Friday, November the 1st, from 6pm.
Chatting to the Southsea artist, Roo said, “I am super excited to be exhibiting my first solo show at The Corner Collective, titled ‘Dressing Up’.
“As a child, I can remember being enchanted by my grandmother’s dressing table and was often allowed to play with the handheld and compact mirrors, jewellery boxes and their contents. This has inspired me to produce a new collection of works combined with looking at historical items and costumes.
“New pieces include reworked found items linked to beauty and ‘Dressing Up’ alongside a collection of historical ladies that will turn the air blue so be warned!
“Please feel free to dress up in your favourite outfit and come along and have some fun.”
Opening night at the Corner Collective means an exciting atmosphere. Lots of local creatives attend and make this a well-loved spot to head on down to. I love Roo’s work and can’t wait to have a browse at her new body of work.
When I first landed in Southsea eight years ago, Roo’s street art was the first piece of local art I fell in love with on Osbourne Road. This has recently been replaced by a new piece that stands proud amongst the other Lady Jam artists who took part in a street art jam last year.
I think the artist has a great style by using unique techniques. Roo creates layers with music paper and magazines, then screen prints onto tissue paper and adds final touches with spray paint. There is an individual and creative use of many mediums which all come together to create her lovely pieces.
Using all kinds of vintage boxes to display images, you get a sense of timeless appeal to the artist’s work, as if her art will carry on forever.
Seeing Roo exhibit some new work at the POSE open art studios gave an opportunity to see the kind of collection that might be on display. Working in collaboration with Lynn Nicholls (local ceramicist) on earrings and necklaces was a fantastic surprise and a huge success with the POSE attendees, as her earrings sold out pretty quickly on the Saturday.
Pop along to view the exhibition from Friday the 1st of November and the first ten customers through the door will get a goody bag.
