The thing about the seasons changing and Summer ending is new fresh things to look forward to. One such thing is ‘Human Tides’ that has drawings and paintings featuring two acclaimed figurative artists, the Portsmouth-born, London based Joseph Loughborough and London born, Portsmouth based Colin Merrin. This well anticipitated exhibition is happening at the Box Gallery on Castle Road. Both artists have worked hard and achieved success in the UK and internationally.
Finding out about the artists involved, Joseph Loughborough studied in Portsmouth before heading off to London. His art explores themes of emotion, sexuality, and existential contemplation. He delves into the complexities of the human condition through his expressive and emotive mark-making. Describing his art in 5 words he said, “Expressive – Graphical – Allegorical – Vibrant – Introspective.”
Colin Merrin moved from East London to Southsea and has a studio at the Art Space. He has created some incredible work that has already been shown at the Box Gallery. His signature style is building up layers of paint, collage and mixed materials. Mixing newspaper with paint brings a distinctive style to the artists work. Over recent years, Colin has developed his work using more ideas around humanism and so this latest exhibition really works well and incorporates the artists vision and exploration of ideas.
Both Loughborough and Merrin’s work offers their own individual interpretation of humanness. Loughborough offers a raw, impulsive view of the human form where as Merrin’s thoughtful, layered figurations invite the viewer in to bring a perception of what the exhibited pieces mean to the outside world. Together, both artists invite viewers to engage with the art pieces on display and also the work of these artists compliment eachother to offer a fabulous exhibition that has been curated very well.
Check out the exhibition at the Box Gallery from 5th to the 15th September.
