This upcoming weekend, a group of female artists join together and bring Southsea its first live all-female street jam nicknamed LadyJam. Happening in the heart of Southsea on Osbourne Road, it offers a chance to support women on their street art journey and inspire the local community.
How It Started
Midge talked about organising this event, and when asked why she wanted to set something up like this, she said, “LadyJam came about after a desire to paint over a wall I had created down at the old casino wall a few years ago. It needed refreshing and after speaking to Ooberla, we both decided to repaint our original walls.
I started thinking about inviting another artist friend and then another artist popped into my mind. An image started to form where each wall was being painted by a female artist and I started to run with the idea of an all-female paint jam. The timing of this coincided with the ‘Women In Art’ exhibition at the Aspex which is happening in March, and it all just came together.”
First Female Street Art Jam
Speaking of the wknd line up on the 24th and 25th of February, Lou said, ‘There has never been a female street art event in the city before, and the excitement started when trying to come up with a lineup of both experienced street artists and those who are new to the scene.
Looking at the list of female artists I could approach and collaborate with made me realise just how underrepresented women working in art are in the city. I wanted to see a change and from there LadyJam was born.”
Nine artists will participate in the street art event, concentrating on Osbourne Road. As soon as Lou asked the other eight artists if they would join her for this weekend, they all said a massive YES immediately. There has been a whole buzz around town about the paint sessions happening on Saturday and Sunday. All the creative community have jumped on board and shown support which the artists involved have found very heartwarming and appreciative.
Where And Who Is Involved
You can pop down to Osbourne Road this weekend to see all the murals being created. Roo Abrook has her famous mural that has lasted for the last 7 or 8 years, so it will be exciting and intriguing to see whether she will create a new mural or refresh the well-loved piece that’s already there.
