Having seen the success of the POSE art weekend here in Portsmouth, and the work involved by Colin Merrin and Lynn Nicholls AKA Southsea Mudlark, I am excited to see they have a joint exhibition at the Corner Collective on Albert Road.
Opening on the weekend of the We Shine Festival and starting on Thursday the 21st of November, it is set to be a fantastic show.
Fans of Lynn Nicholls will have seen the brilliant collaboration that she did with Roo Abrook. Her style and experience of working closely with an artist really shine with the end products. I loved the recent products that included earrings and necklaces, as well as figurines at the POSE wknd event.
Artists Colin Merrin and Southsea Mudlark have been working on a collaborative project where each artist is exploring surface decoration and they have been prepping for a few months now.
Lynn’s ceramic work is generally larger in scale with differing forms. Her distinct gestural underglaze marks are evident beneath Colin’s figurative and direct hand-drawn responses covering the ceramic surfaces.
Speaking to Lynn Nicholls she said, “One of the lasting successes of the project has been a refreshing spontaneous approach that can be fraught with risk. Ceramics is a delicate and uncertain process until the final firing. For example, most of the decoration was applied on greenware (dried mud). Then Colin worked for quite a few hours on the surface before it was returned to the kiln.”
The exhibition also includes ceramic jewellery and new works on paper and canvas merging the relationship between functional and decorative pottery, figurative drawing and abstract mark-making.
The ceramicist said, “After many months of making the work, both of us are looking forward to the show and hoping people will enjoy this unique exhibition.”
Explore this collaborative exhibition at the Corner Collective for one weekend only. Starting on Friday the 22nd of November and finishing on Sunday the 24th of November.
