In the words of Open Ya Mouth’s popular impresario Omar Mahmood Lagares, “Ladies, Jellybeans and Non-Binary sweets, you’re in for a treat!” OYM’s Multi-Cultural Fair is back for the third year running with a typically rich, eclectic line-up of guests and contributors. On Saturday 4th May, Victoria Park will play host to some of the city’s most popular poets, rappers, comedians and dancers in a jam-packed celebration of creative diversity.
Line Up
Running from 10am-7pm, this year is set to be bigger and better than ever. With two stages showcasing the talents of Hannah Reem, Jackson Davis, Just Lucy, Dockem, Darkstar Graver, Templar Animated, Olly Simmons and Hannah Newton, there will also be plenty of open mic slots available throughout the day.
Poet Cecily Holland is thrilled to be taking part. “There are so many different things going on; the atmosphere will be great, especially as Omar and his team are running it. His energy and joy are so infectious. I can’t wait to see all the other amazing acts.”
Organiser Omar Mahmood Lagares feels that this is so much more than just a local arts fair; it is an innovative platform where the community can congregate to engage in artistic exchanges and a shared passion for creative pursuits. “We started the fair as there were so many barriers to accessing creative performance opportunities in public spaces without financial obstacles. We seek to provide attractive opportunities to local performers and a culturally diverse platform for all to find influence and inspiration.”
The Diversity of Voice
Co-ordinator Emily Marsh has played a pivotal role in ensuring this diversity of voice. “I LOVE how reflective of our community OYM is. I think this largely comes from the platform itself being open to anyone and supportive of everyone. I think giving people the space to try out material or entirely new things and being welcoming and supportive of that is what makes it so diverse and reflective of our community.”
Open Ya Mouth’s monthly open mic event at The Wedgewood Rooms is an established indie favourite on the performance circuit. From its genesis as a humble spoken word gig at the Fax Fox pub in Albert Road to hosting 200+ strong crowds at its dedicated performance venue, The Wedge, Open Ya Mouth has always been a vibrant medley of creativity. A home to bohemes from a wide range of artistic disciplines; both the hopeful initiate and seasoned performer find community here. Regardless of whether storytelling, singing or even magic is your thing, everyone gets their opportunity to shine in the spotlight.
Free Event
Open Ya Mouth is, and always has been, a free event. At a time when the cost-of-living crisis is affecting every member of society, this serves as a lifeline for many creatives. Breaking down barriers and a commitment to reducing socio-economic inequalities is a huge part of OYM’s ethos. Emily believes better cultural engagement in schools, family and community environments is key. OYM plays their part by offering rap workshops in schools and the chance for young people to perform at the fair. “Communities can break barriers in everyday life! The work of people in the community putting on events, showcasing what they do and what others could get involved in helps form relationships and creates a flourishing and nurturing environment for creativity to thrive. I am so hyped for the future of OYM. The world is our oyster!”
