Christmas brings the perfect excuse for a singalong, but not everyone always fancies a traditional carol service. So if you’re looking for something different, perhaps this event is for you!
Yes, it’s set in a church – around a big Christmas tree in the marvellous and atmospheric early 19th century St Cuthbert’s in Baffins. And yes, there will be Christmas songs – but this concert promises a wide variety of classics, full of fun and top-quality musical entertainment. The line–up includes:
· Christmas with Bing & Elvis
· Songs from the musicals
· A bit of Rocky Horror
· African beats
· The Bee Gees
· Kylie Minogue; and
· Santa Claus is Coming to Town – with a difference!
It all makes sense when you learn that the group behind the event is the Solent Gay Men’s Chorus. Formed back in 2012 with just a few guys regularly attending rehearsals, it has expanded over the years and the Christmas concert has become a much-loved highlight of their annual calendar.
The good news for us is that it’s Portsmouth’s turn to host the concert this year, which will last around 90 minutes on the evening of Friday 13 December. On the night, we’ll be treated to more than 20 voices from across the Solent area – from Southampton to Pompey and beyond.
“Several founding members are still with us now” says Keith Stringer, the group’s chair. As well as being an experienced bunch, their enthusiasm for music is infectious, bringing their events a relaxed and feelgood atmosphere. “The concert will appeal to all ages and attendees will enjoy our friendly atmosphere and a few laughs along the way!”
The singers make a diverse group, with the only qualification for joining being to have a male voice. Members come from across the LGBT+ community along with their straight allies, and they range in age from around 30 to 95 years old.
“Overwhelmingly, our members say that they get a great sense of belonging by being part of a diverse group,” says Keith. “Singing is good for wellbeing and mental health, and we love to share it with others.”
Matt Crisp has been singing with the group since its early days. “Rehearsals have been a lot of fun, and we’re even trying a little choreography this year, jumping about to the Time Warp and throwing some shapes to Kylie Minogue” he says.
“This is the third time we have sung at St Cuthbert’s at Christmas, and I’m looking forward to returning to this lovely venue. There’s something for everyone and I’ve no doubt that we’ll get you into the spirit of the season!”
Keith adds that attendees are welcome to dress up in their Christmas finest and, of course, to sing along. “You should definitely come and see us if you enjoy great music and entertainment but want a change from the Christmas Carols traditionally sung at this time of year.”
The concert takes place at 7.30pm on Friday 13 December at St Cuthbert’s Church, Lichfield Road, Portsmouth PO3 6DE. Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children and you can book your places here.
