Soak is a well-known graffiti writer and artist based in Portsmouth. Painting large graffiti murals freehand is a pastime he has enjoyed away from his usual day job. He has built a cool fan base in Portsmouth and further afield by creating work to sell that has his signature style. Whether that be Tonka trucks or his special edition prints and original paintings he has sold at the corner of Albert Road in the gallery, he has a huge following of people who love his use of spray cans. My favourite character is Snoopy and I have loved all the artwork he has created using the famous dog which has ended in me having to buy it!
Speaking to the artist, he said, “I first picked up a can 8 years ago and have been hooked since!
“Meeting many good people along the graffiti journey has made what I do really worthwhile. I love travelling around and painting new spots in new places. I have managed to paint in a few different countries including Australia, Indonesia and Holland and last year spent a lot of time in Bali. This year I have loved Berlin and looking forward to an exciting venture abroad over the Summer.
“I enjoy painting characters and trying new things but I’m a writer so it’s mainly all about the letters! I get inspiration from graff I see but I try to be as original as I can with my style. I generally keep it quite simple and clean and have loved creating all new pieces for the show.”
I asked Soak what he was looking forward to having the exhibition at the Corner Collective this weekend, and he said, “When I think about the show, it is ‘creating pieces to urbanise your living spaces.’ I’m looking forward to showing Southsea what I’ve been busy creating and can’t wait to bring the street into the gallery.”
Fans can expect all new work, prints and objects you can use in your home. There may be some cool stickers to grab and a colouring book to enjoy, you will have to pop down and see for yourself!
