I love that we have an independent radio station in Portsmouth and with Unmade Radio all settled at the Slaughterhouse, it is nice to see how it has grown. There is a real vibe now with the station playing music on a weekend while Bay Coffee is serving coffee from the front, go drop down there to see what I mean.
Co-Founder Molly had a break from her usual DJ slot on the station but is back for a Sunday chill from 11am. I caught up with her to talk about being back on a regular slot with Unmade.
Hi Molly it’s so good to hear you are back on the radio on Sunday. What are you most excited about?
Hi Lou! I’m really looking forward to being back on air again, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a regular show on Unmade. It’s been pretty difficult to balance running the radio station with my own DJing over the last few years, so it’s lovely to now be in a position where I have the time for it. We’ve recently had a lot of upgrades to our studio, and our new friends Bay Coffee have just moved into the Slaughterhouse with us, so I’m looking forward to the new energy that will bring to the space.
What kind of music do you play?
Oat Milk was my original show concept back when we started the station in 2021, and was mainly structured around ambient and trance-influenced sounds, though this evolved over time. The new show will retain some of that same energy but will explore a more expansive array of club sounds – dance music that suits a Sunday morning.
How long has Unmade Radio been going and where would you like to see it go in the future?
We’ve been broadcasting for over 3 years, and based in our current home in the Slaughterhouse in Southsea for the last 2. We never really had super clear ideas of how we wanted to grow, but it’s been so nice to see the community around the station building organically over the last few years. We’ve always got new ideas for things we’d like to do, new projects we’d like to run, but for now we have to balance the workload with our day jobs. We do have some exciting events planned for later in the year, so keep an eye on our socials for those.
What are you most excited about with new music at the moment?
It feels like it’s a very exciting time for UK producers and for left-field club sounds, with labels like Scuffed Recordings, Livity, Cloudcore, All Centre and Taipan Trax putting out some of my favourite releases of recent years. It feels like a lot of the most progressive UK stuff is blurring and transcending genre in a way which feels very fresh.
Where is the best place for people to find out about you?
If you want to know more about Unmade Radio, our Instagram is the place we update most regularly. I’ve also just given our website a refresh, so you could also head there.
I’ve got way less to update on other platforms, other than lots of photos of my dog on instagram, so you can follow me over there if that’s your jam.
Follow the links and head on over to the station via their website to listen to Molly on Sundays.
