Tomato Plant Frenzy

We all know how the song goes 'You say tomato I say?" but were you one of those people that just had to grow tomato plants during lockdown? Having a tiny seed and watching it spring to life by just adding water has kept the nation occupied during those lockdown weeks. Some people even managed to grow tomatoes just from the seeds of the little round red juicy things they kept in the fridge!

Look at you lot giving Nigella, Jamie and Mary Berry a run for their money these last few weeks by showing all your culinary skills on social media. I have to say I have done more cooking over the last few weeks than I have for about 3 years!

One of the fantastic side effects of this lockdown period is our community embracing home cooking - alongside the occasional takeaway, of course! We’re all finding ourselves at home with a lot more time on our hands than we’re used to, so a lot of people - myself included - are spending some extra time in the kitchen.

Antica Bread And Pasta

Walking in the door of Hunter-Gatherer I expected to see a 50-year-old Italian there to greet me for my pasta class which I was going to be part of for the evening. I don't know why I had this idea in my head! Spending a few weeks talking over Instagram gave me these preconceptions and I always think of someone who has such a passion for bread and pasta to be Italian but this is not true. Instead, Lorin who is smart, handsome and is only 29 years old stood before me with a whole world of knowledge and has crammed so much into his life already!

Andres New Premises

Standing proudly on Osbourne road sits Andre’s Food Bar, Southsea's oldest sandwich shop and this week I caught up with co-owner of the business Antony to chat about its history. Antony is the cousin of Andre and they both worked together to revamp the business in 2016 when Andre's french dad retired, changing the family business name that most people will remember as being La Croissantiere. Having now been open for 2 years it seemed the right time to open a second shop which would actually sit quite close to the original establishment that Andre's parents had owned in Guildhall Walk.

Southsea Festival

What a weekend planned for the 14th and 15th July with the Southsea Food Festival that has been going now for 12 years and has just grown each year to be such a great event with a buzzing atmosphere. Offering a real celebration of food for the whole 2 days, it is a chance to see the local food businesses we have step outside of their shops and produce some really mouthwatering festival food! With over 60 stalls and lots planned for both days, if you love food and a touch of gin you know it is somewhere you need to head down to.

Vegan Sarnies

Spending time out and about drinking oat milk hot chocolates in The Southsea Deli and then wandering around while interviewing great independents and creatives for the blog, I have spent quite a bit of time reaching for a trusty old sandwich in Southsea. I thought I would share which of my sandwiches really did hit the mark and actually turned out to be vegan!

Forced To Be

Having met Jenna Boyson a few times at various fayres around Southsea, I wanted to catch up with her and talk one to one about her mission, love, future and main project, Forced To Be Fussy Having spent time these last few weeks changing my own diet by cutting out milk and thinking about cutting out dairy, I remembered Jenna. She’s had to remove so many foods from her diet, I wanted to talk to her about how that felt and what steps she’s taken to get where she is now.

I’m a fries purist. I don’t generally like things on my chips other than salt, vinegar and sometimes a dip ON THE SIDE. I never understood the joy of cheesy chips, even at 3am after a night out in my student days.
